From The First To The Third Generation

We are a family owned excavating company located in Schwenksville, Pa. The business was originally started in 1962 by Robert Harvey Slater Sr. (Pete) with the help of his wife Barb to take care of the office work. He started with nothing but a seventy dollar Dodge Dump Truck hauling trash off of job sites and was known as Robert Slater & Co. After earning enough money he bought his first Case Backhoe, and jumped into the excavating field. In 1970 he incorporated the business and it became Robert Slater, Inc. He worked long hours and tireless nights to keep his company prosperous. Eventually, his two brothers joined the business; their names were Mel and Ed. With their help he was able to build an even larger company and take on more projects than he could before. |
| After several years his two sons took interest in the company and started working for him. With the help of Rob and Tom, Harvey was able to expand his company once again. He now had his brothers and sons helping him create the company he always dreamed of owning. With the increased man power and young influence they were able to put a little more kick into each and every project. Harvey stressed that Robert Slater, Inc. must provide every customer with the best and most efficient work if his employees said they gave 100 percent he would ask why they didn’t give them 110 percent. Harvey and his crew worked hard and long everyday to make sure there were no mistakes made. |  |

During the early 90’s Harvey decided that it was time he started looking for his successor. After a long thoughtful process he decided that his son Tom took a lot of interest in the business and would be the right man for the job. Tom saw this as an enormous task, but not an impossible one. He found that with a little help from his father, his brother, and the rest of the crew it was not as enormous as he thought. He took his job even more seriously now since he had fairly big shoes to fill, but fill them he did. He worked long hours bidding jobs and keeping projects for his crew coming. His brother Rob helped take care of completing the projects since Tom was busy trying to keep the business running. |
| In 2005, Tom’s nephew Eric took an interest in the company, and started out working as office/shop personnel. A year later, Tom hired his oldest son Tommy as another office employee in order to learn from his grandmother how to keep the company records. He soon realized that with the help of Eric and Tommy he would be able to add new ideas and man power to the business. Later he also hired his nephew Robbie as a laborer to help build up his work force. In 2009, Eric graduated from Pennsylvania College of Technology with an Associate’s Degree in Heavy Construction Equipment Technology (Operator Emphasis). After finishing his degree he entered the union and is now working for Tom as an operator. Tommy is going to Gwynedd-Mercy College to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, so he can help boost his father’s already prosperous company.
